Im Magento-Ökosystem wird gerade intensiv die Rolle des Modul-Marktplatzes Magento Connect diskutiert. Angeregt unter anderem durch einen Vortrag von Karen Baker im Rahmen der Meet Magento New York, in dem die schlechte Qualitätskontrolle auf der Seite von Magento/eBay angemahnt wurde, wird überlegt, wie in Zukunft mit Third-Party-Apps umgegangen werden soll.

Der Sinn und Zweck eines Marktplatzes, über den mit einem Klick – also ohne weitere Review-Möglichkeiten – weitere Funktionalitäten hinzugefügt werden können, wird auch in einem längerem Thread auf Stackexchange unterschiedlich bewertet. Ein Lösungsvorschlag lautet beispielsweise:
In my opinion the solution is easy and cheap. It is not about creating yet another new Extension Marketplace, commercial or free. This is not a technical issue, it is all about communication.
If Magento Connect would state it is a developer resource, and that extensions should be reviewed before installation, and that only developers should install extensions, this would be a non-issue. Merchants that still install extensions do so knowing the risks.
Bezüglich der jüngst bekanntgewordenen eBay-/PayPal-Trennung äußert sich Phillip Jackson – einer der Betreiber des Magetalk-Podcasts – positiv und sieht die Zukunft Magentos nicht gefährdet.
All of that aside, nevermind where we’re at today, think about the future. The investment in Magento 2 is astounding – they have essentially staked the future of Magento on this product and have rearchitected how Magento works internally to this end. They have tasked the key eBay folks in product, search, platform, and marketing to take this ship across the finish line.
Such a monumental investment into Magento on eBay’s part signals to me their commitment to the platform. If they wanted Magento to die off; sure send it off to Paypal. Cancel the conferences, the drinkups, the partner forums. Cancel Magento Live. Fire your community manager. Move things around and stop investing.
But they’re not doing those things. They continue to invest and we should take that as a sign of continued commitment.
